The Effect of Ethanol on Cellular Transport of Alpha-Amino Isobutyric Acid and Acid Metabolism

Abstract
Since ethanol administration increase the protE;in synthesis of liver (Lee, H. Y. and Ryoo, H:.: --Kyungpook National University Med. J. , 11 : EI9, 19i0j,studies were undertaken on rats to evaluate the effect of ethanol on the cellular transport of alpha-aminoisobutyric acids (AIB)-t~C in tis:~ue and the conversion of amino acids mixed-"C to CO-~.
Ethanol administered subcutaneously caused a significant increase of AIB accumulation in livf~r. The increasing effect remained the same as long as 20 hrs. after the ethanol administration. In other tissues, brain and kidney, the accumulationof AIB was not influenced by ethanol.
Incorporations of amino acids mixed-t;C into liver and serum proteins were significantly increased together with the increase of AIB accumulation, but the increase of expired 1~C0: was slower in the beginning and less significant than the protein synthesis.
From the experimental results, it is deduced that the increasing effect of ethanol on liver protein synthesis is due to the increase of amino acid transport as well as the increase of protein synthetic activity.
